Artistic Director: Karen Oughtred
Karen Oughtred founded AATI in New York in 2003 with the commitment of introducing new plays to an American audience by established and emerging Australian Aboriginal playwrights, and creating and developing ongoing artistic and international communication between indigenous artists. Karen is an Australian theatre artist with a background in educational theatre and production. Her involvement in theatre by indigenous populations began in the 1980’s, with Aboriginal students in Australia and continued in America with Native American theatre artists. She is a graduate of New Actors Workshop and gained her MA in theatre from Antioch University. As Head Teacher of English supervising staff and curriculum development in secondary schools, she has taught students from elementary to post-graduate, doctoral candidates. Karen has introduced, taught and developed Drama programs in a variety of settings including centers for disadvantaged youth, the disabled, gifted and talented and indigenous populations. A director, mask makerng, directing and performing. She works in the Education Department at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and is Production Stage Manager for a variety of theatre and dance companies in New York City.
Associate Director: Jennifer Rice
Jennifer Rice is a Tuscarora Native American originally from Niagara Falls. Her extensive background in theatre arts includes an MFA in Acting from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, membership in SAG and Actors' Equity along with various film and TV credits. She has a long-standing relationship with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, American Indian Community House and various Native American artists working in and around NYC. She has been an active member of the NYC Native American artistic community and is proud to be a suppporting member of AATI.
